University Chess Nepal: Madan Krishna Kayastha Wins Kathford Trophy

KATHMANDU: Madan Krishna Kayastha of Golden Gate International College edged Purushottam Chaulagain of Shanker Dev Campus under head-to-head superiority to clinch the Kathford First National University Chess Tournament. Both Madan Krishna and Purushottam finished the tournament tied on 8.5 points but the former won the tournament on the basis of winning the seventh round duel on Tuesday. Sushil Chaudhary of CBM College finished third with 7.5 points.

Madan started the final day with a victory over Prakash Nepal of Damak Campus in the eighth round and played a draw with College-mate Roshan Kumar Jaiswal in the ninth. Purushottam defeated Nikesh Duwal of Advance Engineering College and Sajin Maharjan of Patan Multiple Campus in the eighth and ninth round respectively.

Likewise, Sushil — who was held by Roshan in the eighth round — overcame Ashish Acharya of Pulchowk Engineering College in the ninth. Madan received Rs 25,000, while Purushottam and Sushil took home Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.

Roshan, Suraj Pandit of Pyramid, Prakash, Prashan Bhasima of Golden Gate, Bikram Dhwoj Shrestha of Tri Chandra and Rajan Dahal rounded up inside top nine with seven points each. Saurabh Pradhan of Patan Multiple stood 10th with 6.5 points.

Grishma Pradhan of Kathmandu University was adjudged the Rising Star, while Archana Rai of GM College won the girls’ section title. Best within the Universities were Dambar Chauhan (TU), Suresh Shrestha (Kathmandu), Arjun Pandey (Pokhara), Binaya Shrestha (Purbanchal) and Sadananda Rijal (Mahendra Sanskrit). National Sports Council Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama, taekwondo star Deepak Bista, Nepal chess Champion Manish Hamal among others handed over the prizes. In all, 143 players from five Universities participated in the tournament organised by the University Sports Association Nepal.
